April 3 | Saint Richard of Chichester

Forget dusty old portraits and boring stories. Today, imagine that you are suddenly an orphan in medieval England. If that isn't tragic enough, the adults who are supposed to look out for you totally betray you, cheating you out of the entire inheritance your family left behind. You are left with absolutely nothing.

Zero. Instead of wallowing in defeat, today's Saint decides to fight back, not with a sword, but with his massive intellect, his intense faith, and his unshakable integrity. He goes on to become one of the smartest guys in Europe, becomes a powerful bishop, and literally goes toe-to-toe with the King of England. Oh, and that intense fight with the King? It leaves him totally homeless.

This is the dramatic story of St. Richard of Chichester. Richard was born in the year 1197, in Burford, England. After being orphaned and robbed of his family wealth, Richard didn't sit around feeling sorry for himself. He wanted an education. But without money, he had to grind for it. He worked incredibly hard to support himself, and managed to study at some of the absolute best, most elite schools in the world at the time, Oxford, Paris, and Bologna.

Even when he eventually had access to comforts and luxuries, he chose to live in deliberate simplicity, refusing to surround himself with fancy things. He knew exactly what it was like to have nothing, and he trusted completely in God rather than material wealth. Because of his brilliance, his deep trust in God, and his clear moral compass, Richard was eventually made a bishop, specifically, the Bishop of Chichester. And just as a quick side note, today he is still honored as the patron saint of the Diocese of Chichester.

But getting this major promotion didn't mean his life got any easier. In fact, it was about to get a whole lot harder. Enter the main villain of our story, King Henry III of England. King Henry was a powerful monarch who wanted to control everything in his kingdom, including who got appointed in the church and where the church's money went. He tried to put intense political pressure on Richard to just fall in line and do what the king wanted. But remember, Richard was a guy of total integrity.

He wasn't going to let a King bully the church. So Richard firmly resisted the king. King Henry III was furious. If Richard wasn't going to play by the king's rules, the king was going to make him pay the price.

Royal officials marched in and confiscated all of the diocesan income, taking away all of Richard's funds, effectively leaving the bishop completely homeless. Think about that. A powerful bishop suddenly out on the streets. But Richard didn't care. For years, he lived out of borrowed rooms and celebrated Mass wherever people would let him. He didn't even have a horse or a carriage anymore, so he just walked. He continued his pastoral visits to the people of his diocese entirely on foot.

Richard believed that fixing problems in the church couldn't just be talk. Reform had to be concrete. He focused on training his priests, making sure the sacraments were treated with reverence, giving great sermons, and most importantly, leading by personal example.

He never grew bitter or resentful. Instead, he focused on a simple, beautiful goal, which became his famous prayer—to know Christ more clearly, love Him more dearly, and follow Him more nearly. For Richard, this wasn't just a nice sentiment. It was the summary of his entire life.

Eventually, the heavy toll of traveling on foot and working constantly wore him down. On April 3, 1253, while he was traveling on pastoral duty in Dover, England, St. Richard passed away. Just nine years later, in 1262, Pope Urban IV canonized him as a saint.

Richard's strength was his integrity. He did the right thing, even when it cost him everything, including his home and his comfort. Today, try to make a stand for what is right, even if it's unpopular with your friends or classmates.
