June 24 | The Nativity of Saint John the Baptist

Forget dusty old portraits and boring stories. Today, imagine standing in the blazing heat of the Judean wilderness. The sun beats down on the dry, cracked earth. The air is completely still.

Suddenly, a figure emerges from the heat haze. He's not wearing fine robes, and he isn't carrying a royal sword. No, he's wearing a rough, scratchy garment made entirely of camel's hair. His voice is not the voice of the king. He's wearing a rough, scratchy garment made entirely of camel's hair. Booms across the rocky valleys, a direct and completely uncompromising message echoing over the rushing waters of the Jordan River. Repent, prepare for the coming of the Messiah. He is wild, he is fiercely devoted to God, and his words are so incredibly powerful that huge crowds flock to see him, and even powerful kings are terrified of him.

Saint John the Baptist. John the Baptist's story doesn't start in the rugged wilderness. It actually starts with a mind-blowing miracle. According to the Gospel of Luke, there was an older couple named Zachariah and Elizabeth. They had been married for a very long time, but had never been able to have children, and they were well past the age where that seemed physically possible. But God had a massive plan in the works. One day, the angel Gabriel appears to Zechariah with some shocking news.

Elizabeth is going to have a son, and this child's entire purpose in life will be to prepare the way for the Lord. Now, Zechariah does what a lot of us would probably do when faced with impossible news. He doubts it. Because he didn't believe the angel's message and he didn't believe it. So, he's going to have a son. And he's going to have a son. And he's Zachariah was struck temporarily mute. He literally could not speak a single word until the day John was born.

As John grows up, he doesn't settle for a normal, comfortable life. He heads straight out into the harsh wilderness of Judea. There, he completely embraces a life of severe austerity and deep, intense prayer. Picture this guy out in the wild, isolated from the comforts of society, dedicating every single waking moment to preparing his heart for God.

When he becomes an adult, he steps up to the Jordan River and begins his ultimate mission. He starts preaching a fiery message of repentance, telling people they need to change their hearts and renew their lives. And people actually listened. Massive crowds traveled from all across Judea and Galilee just to hear him speak. He began baptizing those who truly wanted to change their ways. in the waters of the Jordan River. Then comes the climax of his entire mission. One day, out of the massive crowd gathered at the river, Jesus himself steps into the water.

John instantly recognizes Jesus as the one he had been sent to announce. He baptizes Jesus, and in that incredible moment, John knew his role was to step aside and shine the spotlight completely on Jesus. But John wasn't just humble. He was incredibly brave. He had so much influence over the people that King Herod actually feared him. But John didn't let the king's power intimidate him or silence his message. When King Herod entered into an unlawful marriage, John called him out on it directly.

Think about how much courage it takes to criticize a brutal king to his face. That This bold move led to John being thrown into a dark prison cell, and eventually he was executed for standing up for the truth. He died a glorious martyr, having spent his entire life, from the very beginning, preparing people for the coming of Christ.

St. John the Baptist is the patron saint of conversion, baptism, preachers, and even many cities and countries around the world. In art, you will often see him pictured with his signature camel hair garment, carrying a cross made out of reeds from the Jordan River, holding a lamp, or standing near the River Jordan.

John the Baptist's motto was, He must increase, and I must decrease. In a world where everyone is obsessed with being the center of attention, getting the most likes, the most views, the most praise, John challenges us to do the exact opposite. This week, find one way to let someone else shine. Instead of taking the credit for a group project or a joke, give it to a friend. When you're talking with your friends, Instead of steering the conversation back to yourself, ask someone else about their day, and truly listen.
