But then, out of nowhere, a terrifying near-death experience hits you, a dramatic shock that shatters your comfortable little bubble. What do you do next?

Today, we are looking at a man whose life reads exactly like an intense Christian adventure tale. St. Norbert of Zanten. Born around the year 1080 near the Rhine River in Zanten, Germany, Norbert did not start out as a super-holy, perfect guy. In fact, his early life was all about looking out for himself. He began his career as a court cleric. But that dramatic shock and near-death experience? It woke him up. It broke right through his complacency. He suddenly realized that his ambitious, comfortable life was empty.

So, he changed his course entirely, embracing strict penance and deciding to seek out an authentic priestly life instead of just playing the part. Norbert didn't just quietly change his own habits. He started preaching reform to everyone else. And let me tell you, his preaching was not boring. It was confrontational, but in the right way. Norbert boldly targeted moral compromise and clerical laxity, which meant he was calling out religious leaders who were getting lazy and not living up to their promises. Even more, he aggressively challenged the people who were lame, as if he was saying, I'll just take your money and I'll give you your education.

comfortably sitting back and making excuses, saying things like, well, this is just how things are. Norbert told them, no, we can do better. During a time when there was a lot of doctrinal confusion, he fiercely defended the church's faith in the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist, calling everyone back to taking the sacraments seriously.

Norbert also founded a brand new religious order called the Premenstretensens, also known as the Norbertines. You can easily recognize them by their distinct white habit. History calls his movement Reform with a Backbone, because it wasn't just him giving good advice. He created an entire way of life that could replicate itself. The Norbertines beautifully combined communal living, deep liturgical devotion, and active pastoral work out in the real world.

Because of his relentless work, Norbert was eventually made the Archbishop of Magdeburg in Germany. Now, you might think getting a massive promotion means things get easier, but for Norbert, it meant stepping right into the brutal realities of governance. He didn't just get to sit on a throne. He was immediately thrown into intense political conflict, dealt with angry factions, and faced heavy resistance from people who hated his strict Yet he stood incredibly strong. He worked tirelessly to reconcile enemies and stabilize a church that had been deeply damaged by toxic power struggles.

He served faithfully until he died on June 6, 1134, and was officially canonized as a saint in 1582 by Pope Gregory XIII. St. Norbert is recognized as the patron saint of peace and reconciliation, as well as Eucharistic devotion and the Norbertine order he founded. If you ever see a statue or painting of him, look for his attributes. He is usually shown holding a monstrance and a tall staff called a crozier, while wearing his signature white habit. St. Norbert's holiness is considered exemplary.

Precisely because he didn't just find himself spiritually and keep it to himself. He let his conversion completely restructure his entire life forever. Today, be a peacemaker, just like St. Norbert.
