Welcome, young history buffs and curious minds, to My Daily Saint, the podcast that digs deep into the incredible lives of the saints, those remarkable people who shaped history and continue to inspire us today. Forget dusty old portraits and boring stories. Today, we are talking about a guy who had to fill the biggest and maybe the most cursed shoes in human history. Imagine this. You are part of an exclusive group. You've been traveling for years with a leader who has completely changed the world.

You've seen miracles. You've faced down angry mobs. But then, the unthinkable happens. One of your own, one of the top 12 guys, betrays your leader to his death. That traitor was Judas Iscariot. And suddenly, your sacred circle is broken. The 12 are now just 11.

In ancient Jewish culture, the number 12 wasn't just a random number. It was a symbol of completion, representing the 12 tribes of Israel. To leave the inner circle at 11 was totally unacceptable. They needed a replacement. They needed someone who had been there from the very beginning, watching from the background, ready to step up and complete the team. Enter St. Matthias. Matthias is a man shrouded in mystery, but whose amazing destiny was decided by a roll of the dice, literally. This is still a story of being chosen, stepping out of the shadows, and fighting for truth to the very end.

Let's set the scene in ancient Jerusalem. Jesus has just ascended into heaven, and the apostles are huddled together trying to figure out their next move. The leader of the apostles, Peter, stands up and makes a massive announcement. They need to fill Judas' spot. But they can't just pick anybody off the street. The new guy had to be someone who had followed Jesus The whole time, the Lord Jesus came and went among us, beginning from the baptism of John until the day on which he was taken up from us.

In other words, they needed a reliable eyewitness to the resurrection. It turns out, Matthias wasn't exactly a nobody. Even though he wasn't one of the famous twelve, he had been grinding away as one of the seventy-two disciples that Jesus had sent out on missions earlier in the Gospels. He was out there doing the hard work without getting any of the glory. But Matthias wasn't the only one up for the job. There were actually two men perfectly qualified for the position. Matthias, And another faithful guy named Joseph, who was also called Barsabbas.

Imagine the tension. It's a tie. Both men are incredibly holy. Both have been there since day one. How do you choose the next leader of the early church? Do you hold a debate? Do you vote? First, the apostles prayed to the Holy Spirit for ultimate guidance. And second, they cast lots. Casting lots is an ancient practice, kind of like drawing straws or rolling a sacred pair of dice, trusting that God would control the outcome. The lots were cast, the stones fell, and the winner was Matthias.

He was officially the twelfth apostle. After this incredibly dramatic election, Methodus is never mentioned anywhere else in the New Testament. But that absolutely doesn't mean he just sat around doing nothing. According to ancient tradition, Matthias went hardcore. He took his mission to some of the toughest, most rugged places in the ancient world. He preached the gospel in Cappadocia, traveled the shores of the Caspian Sea in modern-day Turkey, and even journeyed all the way down to Ethiopia. Matthias was tough. In church art, his official attributes are a book representing his bold preaching and a battle axe.

Why a battle axe? Like most of the apostles, Matthias didn't get a peaceful retirement. He gave his life for what he believed in. Tradition says he was martyred for his faith, either by being crucified or stoned to death somewhere in Jerusalem. He is also considered a pre-congregation saint, meaning the early Christians instantly recognized his holiness long before the modern canonization process even existed.

Today, St. Matthias is known for a very specific and powerful type of help. He is the patron saint invoked for assistance against alcoholism, and he offers spiritual support for recovered alcoholics. Even centuries after his death, his legacy is about stepping in to help people fight their hardest, darkest battles, and helping them fill the void in their lives. With something whole and holy.

Think about how Matthias lived before he was chosen. He spent years in the background as one of the 72 disciples. He was faithful, he learned, and he followed, even when he wasn't in the spotlight or getting the credit. But because he was faithful in the background, he was completely ready when his name was called to do something huge. In your life today, you might feel like you're stuck in the background. Maybe you're not the star of the sports team, the lead in the school play, or the most popular kid in your friend group.

But what you do when no one is watching matters. Your challenge this week is to do one background task with absolute excellence and zero complaints. Clean up the kitchen without being asked. Help a classmate study without showing off.

Be a faithful friend when it's inconvenient. Train in the shadows, just like Matthias, because you never know when the lot will fall to you, and you'll be called to step up and change the world. Thank you for joining us on My Daily Saint. We look forward to sharing another incredible story of faith and courage with you tomorrow.
