The most powerful people in your world want you silenced and out of the picture. Where do you go? And more importantly, who is brave enough to take you in, knowing that by sheltering you, they are putting a massive target on their own back?

Today's saint was a nobleman, a worker of miracles, a trusted friend to emperors. And get this, he is famously recognized in art as a bishop with a bear. Yes, a literal bear. This is the story of Saint Maximinus of Trier.

Maxim Minas was born in Germany in the year 332 to Gaelic nobility, and his brother was actually Saint Maxentius of Portiers. But Maxim Minas didn't choose a life of easy luxury. Instead, he gave his entire life to the church. He was educated and formally ordained by Saint Agratius, who was the acting bishop of the city of Trier.

Maxim Minas must have been an incredibly dedicated student and a deeply holy young man, because he eventually replaced his mentor and took over as the Bishop of Trier himself. Now, being a bishop back then wasn't just about wearing fancy robes and giving long speeches. It was a frontline battle. The church was being aggressively ripped apart by something called the Arian heresy, which denied the divinity of Jesus. It wasn't just a polite disagreement.

Church leaders were being exiled, banished, and threatened. Enter St. Maximinus. He became a stalwart, unbreakable defender of Orthodox Christianity. He boldly opposed the Arian heresy whenever and wherever he possibly could. And this is where the real drama of his life comes in. One of the greatest heroes of the early church, St. Athanasius, stood up against the Arian heresy and was exiled for his condemnation of it. Banished, Kicked out. He needed a place to go to survive. Who was brave enough to host him?

You guessed it. Our guy, Maximinus. Maximinus didn't care about the intense political danger. He welcomed St. Athanasius and gave him a safe place to stay. And he didn't just do this once. When another major church leader, the banished Bishop Paul of Constantinople, needed a place to hide, Maximinus stepped up and hosted him in a similar manner. St. Jerome, one of the most famous figures in church history, Later called Maximinus one of the most courageous bishops of his time.

Maximinus didn't just spend time hiding out, either. He established close ties with two different emperors, meaning he was a major player on the world stage. He also took his fight for the truth on the road, playing a major role in the massive church councils of Milan, Sardica, and Cologne.

Maximinus passed away in either 349 or 352, and he is recognized as the patron saint of his home city, Trier. But he is also fiercely invoked as protection against some very specific things, perjury, which is lying under oath, as well as loss at sea and destructive rains.

In your life today, there are people who get exiled. Maybe they are bullied, left out, or mocked for standing up for what is right. Your challenge today is to be exactly like St. Maximinus. Be a safe haven. Be the friend who stands up for someone when others are bossipping about them.
