Blessed Fulton Sheen relic to be venerated at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York

A relic of Blessed Fulton Sheen will be available for public veneration at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York on Oct. 1, one week after the archbishop’s beatification.

The relic will be placed permanently in the cathedral after public veneration and Mass, according to a Sept. 27 press release from Bishop Edmund Whalen, vicar general of the Archdiocese of New York.

“We are overjoyed and grateful to welcome a relic of Blessed Fulton J. Sheen to St. Patrick’s Cathedral this Thursday, October 1, 2026,” he wrote.

Bishop Whalen also reflected on the reach of Sheen’s ministry and his ties to the archdiocese.

“Known for his landmark television show Life is Worth Living, which brought Catholic thought to millions of viewers each week, Blessed Fulton Sheen lived a faithful life of eloquence, integrity, and astonishing humility.” Bishop Whalen wrote. “We are blessed to have had him as an Auxiliary Bishop in this archdiocese and now as an advocate for us in Heaven.”

Sheen became the first American-born bishop to be declared a “Blessed” Sept. 24 at a Mass in St. Louis attended by more than 50,000 people, as Zeale News previously reported. Relics, including Sheen’s jawbone, were on display for veneration at the beatification. Sheen served as an auxiliary bishop of New York from 1951 to 1966 before he was appointed bishop of Rochester.
