Bishop Kevin Kenney, an auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis, Minnesota, has been diagnosed with lung cancer, according to a July 15 announcement from the archdiocese.

Bishop Kenney shared the diagnosis in a video with Archbishop Bernard Hebda and Auxiliary Bishop Michael Izen. He said doctors discovered the cancer while investigating a persistent cough.

“I was shocked to hear the news,” he said, “because as a non-smoker and one who has tried to stay healthy, I have felt good.”

The bishop said he remains “positive and hopeful” and believes in prayer and God’s will.

“I know the process will not be easy,” he said, “but with your prayers and support, all will be well.”

Treatment is expected to begin in early August, and Bishop Kenney intends to continue serving as he is able as an auxiliary bishop and pastor of St. Olaf Catholic Church in Minneapolis, according to the announcement.

Bishop Kenney asked for prayers for himself, his medical team, and others facing illness.

Bishop Izen said he was “honored to pray” with Bishop Kenney for the intercession of St. Sharbel as Bishop Kenney applied blessed oil associated with the saint to his chest. He encouraged the faithful also to seek the intercession of the Lebanese Maronite saint, who is known for miraculous healings.

“So I humbly ask you to add an intention to your daily prayers,” Bishop Izen said, “begging St. Sharbel to intercede for our dear brother, Bishop Kenney, and all the sick of the archdiocese.”
