Pope Leo XIV encouraged leaders of Jesuit colleges and universities at the Vatican June 25 to form students in faith, service, and hope as they prepare the next generation to meet the challenges of the modern world.
In his remarks to members of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities, the Holy Father reflected upon the Society of Jesus' four Universal Apostolic Preferences, beginning with the importance of helping students encounter Christ. He said Jesuit universities should ensure members of their academic communities come to know "the One who is Truth."
The four Universal Apostolic Preferences, confirmed by Pope Francis in 2019 after a two-year process of discernment, outline the Society of Jesus' guiding priorities for its apostolic mission, including its work in education.
Recalling what he described as a “growing hunger” for God among young people during his recent apostolic visit to Spain Pope Leo encouraged Jesuit institutions to continue making the Spiritual Exercises available on their campuses as a way of helping students encounter Christ.
He added that discernment offers "helpful tools" for remaining open to the promptings of the Holy Spirit in daily decision-making.
The Holy Father then turned to the Society's call to walk with the poor and marginalized, encouraging Jesuit institutions to serve those most in need while expanding educational opportunities for immigrants, refugees, and students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Continuing his reflection, Pope Leo emphasized the role universities play in accompanying young people as they build a hope-filled future, reminding educators that authentic hope is ultimately found in Christ.
"I invite you," Pope Leo said, "to continue to foster that sense of hope among those in your communities through opportunities for dialogue, service and prayer, remembering always that the resurrection of Christ is the ultimate source of hope… and that with him all things are possible."
The Pontiff called on Jesuit institutions to continue educating students about environmental challenges while ensuring their campuses model ecological sustainability, simplicity, and "gratitude for God's gifts."
Pope Leo also highlighted the growing influence of artificial intelligence, encouraging universities to draw on the Church's social teaching as they respond to the digital revolution in ways that are "relevant and effective."
The Holy Father concluded his address by urging educators to continue the Jesuit tradition of forming their students to become "men and women for others.”
