In the hours after Democrats claimed significant victories in the Nov. 3 midterm elections, progressive leaders and allies celebrated the results, urged an aggressive approach to exercising congressional power, and warned of investigations into the Trump administration.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, appearing on NPR’s election night coverage, said the outcomes sent a clear message to progressive House Democrats to wield their power in the chamber “as aggressively as possible.”

He earlier framed the night as evidence that “America has elected a new generation of leadership tonight, with a mandate to lower their cost of living build, not bomb, and never betray the working people who have now entrusted them with power.”

California Rep. Ro Khanna, a Democrat, celebrated the results as a win for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in a video message shared to X after polls closed.

“Tonight DEI is back as America celebrated diversity and inclusion,” Khanna said. “Likely three black governors, the first Latina governor in Texas, the first Muslim American senator, the first gay senator. I love this America!”

Other Democrats signaled that oversight and accountability would top the agenda. Arizona Rep. Yassamin Ansari addressed the President directly, saying Democrats’ “thank you will come in January – with subpoenas.” Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., the Senate Finance Committee’s top Democrat, similarly wrote, “Subpoenas” in an X post.

Illinois Rep. Delia Ramirez singled out current and former Trump administration officials, writing, “Noem, Markwayne, Miller, Homan, Bovino, what’s up?” She added, “Clear your schedule.”

California Rep. Robert Garcia, the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, posted, “LAWYER UP.”

Left-wing streamer Hasan Piker, who campaigned with the future Michigan Democratic Senator-elect Abdul El-Sayed, also celebrated the results.

Responding to a post in which conservative commentator Matt Van Swol described the results as a “Blue tsunami” and “horrifying,” Piker wrote: “WE'RE GONNA PUT YOUR A** IN JAIL EVERYONE GET MORE WOKE RIGHT NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”
