‘Red-Green’ alliance between socialism and radical Islam threatens to undermine U.S. stability, experts caution

Following the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks that claimed nearly 3,000 lives at the World Trade Center in New York City, scholars and policy experts are warning that mass immigration has left the U.S. vulnerable to continued attacks by Islamists.

Investigative reporter and Government Accountability Institute president Peter Schweizer warned in a Sept. 10 podcast that the Islamic world’s jihad against the U.S. has not ended but merely adopted new tactics, singling out the Muslim Brotherhood as a particular threat to American law, society, and culture.

“When you look at what bin Laden said, the reasons for his attack on the United States were that he hated the United States, what it represented, and what it was doing around the world,” he said. “He believed you overcome the Judeo-Christian West by punching them in the face. That’s one faction of the Islamist movement.”

Another faction, which Schweizer argued has been more effective, is political jihad, exploiting and subverting U.S. immigration policy in order to entrench an Islamic population and undermine American social, cultural, and even legal norms.

“If you do what bin Laden did, you’re going to get Americans all riled up, they will become aware of the threat and hit us even harder,” Schweizer said.

Instead, organizations like the Muslim Brotherhood have spent the 25 years since Sept. 11, 2001, accumulating political capital to be spent on America’s downfall.

“They opted for something called ‘civilizational jihad.’ Rather than blowing things up, why don’t we just take things over?” he said.

“They’ve been doing it in Europe, and they’ve been doing it in the United States,” he added. “The Muslim Brotherhood is alive and active in America today electing politicians.”

Schweizer pointed to New York City’s Democratic Mayor Zohran Mamdani, a Ugandan-born Muslim, as an example of Islam’s growing political sway in the U.S.

“If you look at what Mamdani’s views are on terrorism, on groups like Hamas and what those entities say about him, you realize that they didn’t have to blow up a building to take over New York. They just had to have an election strategy,” he said. “Mamdani has embraced the Muslim Brotherhood.”

Other examples Schweizer pointed to include U.S. Reps. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., a Somali-born Muslim, and Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., the U.S.-born child of Palestinian immigrants and a practicing Muslim.

At a Sept. 15 congressional hearing, Mike Gonzalez, a senior research fellow at the Heritage Foundation’s Institute for National Security and Foreign Policy, similarly cautioned that “shadowy nongovernment organizations or individuals” are working to “implant Islamist concepts such as Sharia in our midst and also sow chaos.”

Speaking at the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on South and Central Asia’s hearing, titled “Trojan Horses: Covert Foreign Malign Influence Operations in America,” Gonzalez singled out the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) as one of those organizations, masquerading as a civil rights group while promoting Islamic conquest.

“In reality, CAIR, an organization that wields real influence in this country, is tightly linked to the Muslim Brotherhood, one of the world’s most influential terrorist networks,” he said.

He also pointed to American Muslims for Palestine (AMP), a political activist organization that made headlines for orchestrating protests, encampments, and riots, mostly on college and university campuses, in the wake of Islamic paramilitary group Hamas’ Oct. 7 attacks on Israel in 2023.

“AMP employs Marxist rhetoric, probably to appeal to today’s college students reared by their professors on a steady diet of Marxist diatribe, and took a direct role in the student encampments that roiled campuses in 2024,” Gonzalez said. “AMP Executive Director Osama Abu Irshaid spoke on May 23, 2024, at the encampment on the campus of George Washington University, saying, ‘They are trying to destroy you before you succeed in bringing this imperialism to an end.’”

Gonzalez further emphasized the threat posed to the U.S. by the “red-green” political alliance formed between Islamic activists and radical progressives, including self-described Marxist and socialist groups.

He suggested that the adversaries of the U.S., including China and Cuba, have played a role in supporting the use of Islam as a destabilizing force in the U.S., further coupling Islam with Marxism and socialism.

“This coalition is also the result of the Marxist Left’s decision, sometime in the 1960s, to abandon the industrial worker and farmer as the locus of revolution in favor of groups based on race, ethnicity, sex, sexual preference,” he said.

In comments shared with Zeale News, Gonzalez said that foreign adversaries “take advantage of the open nature of American society to seek influence or cause harm” to the U.S.

“China, Cuba, and Islamist networks infiltrate and influence the K-12 educational system, higher education institutes, government agencies, lobbying firms, and cultural institutions,” he said.

He said that organizations like the Shanghai-based Singham Network, a left-wing dark money source managed by tech tycoon Neville Roy Singham, implant Marxist ideals and fund and facilitate left-wing domestic agitation while Islamic groups like CAIR further radicalize those who are taught to view the U.S. as an authoritarian, imperialist power.

“While distinct, these forces often cooperate through what is described as a ‘Red-Green Alliance’ united in opposition to Western institutions and values,” Gonzalez said. “Congress and state governments should take stronger action to identify, investigate, and counter foreign influence operations by increasing transparency, strengthening oversight, enforcing foreign-agent regulations, and disrupting malign networks operating on U.S. soil.”
