St. Maximilian Kolbe's devotion to Mary drew him ever closer to Christ, shaping a life marked by prayer, courage, and self-giving love.

St. Maximilian Kolbe devoted his life to Christ through a deep love for the Blessed Virgin Mary, allowing that faith to shape a life of prayer, service, and ultimately, extraordinary sacrifice.
As a Conventual Franciscan priest, Maximilian poured that devotion into prayer and evangelization. He founded the Militia of the Immaculata, entrusting his work to Mary and seeking through her intercession to lead souls to her Son.
That same faith sustained him when Nazi persecution brought him to Auschwitz in 1941. Amid the cruelty of the concentration camp, Maximilian continued to live his priesthood, offering prayer and encouragement to those suffering around him.
His love for Christ found its fullest expression when a fellow prisoner, chosen to die by starvation, cried out for his wife and children. Maximilian stepped forward and offered to take the man’s place. He spent his final days in the starvation bunker praying with the other condemned prisoners before he was killed by lethal injection on Aug. 14.
Maximilian’s sacrifice at Auschwitz was the fruit of a life already being offered to God. His witness calls us to a love that gives freely and remains faithful even when the cost is great. Through the intercession of Mary, may we learn to surrender ourselves more fully to Christ and recognize each day as an opportunity to love Him through those He places before us.
