“Through his strength I wait with certain expectation believing with unwavering hope that ... I shall be saved by the Lord’s mighty hand and ... that I will see the Lord himself in his mercy and compassion and receive the legacy of Heaven.” – St. Gregory of Narek
Gregory was born on the shores of Lake Van in Armenia in the mid-900’s. An orphan, he and his brother were raised and educated by their great-uncle, Monk Anania, the founder of the Narek monastery. At the height of Armenia’s golden age, this monastery was one of the centers of learning and culture in the country. Once he finished his studies, Gregory stayed on, not as a student, but as a monk himself and was ordained a priest in 977. He taught theology to students and fellow monks, distinguishing himself for his holiness and intelligence.
He is most well known for his Book of Lamentations, or “book of prayer,” perhaps the most famous text in the Armenian language. At times simply called the “Narek,” because of its author, the Book of Lamentations was intended to be an encyclopedia of prayer for all nations. Composed of 95 prayers, it discusses the centrality of the sacraments in a Catholic’s prayer life, especially Eucharist, confession, and Baptism. Gregory is also known for his famous commentary on the Song of Songs.
Through his life and work, Gregory of Narek attempted to help man to be perfect as God is perfect, while acknowledging our great need for mercy and grace. He died in the year 1003 and is buried in the Narek monastery.
Saint Gregory of Narek, pray for us.
