The final apparition of Our Lady of Fatima on Oct. 13, 1917, brought a renewed call to prayer, repentance, and trust in God, a message that continues to draw Catholics closer to Christ through the Blessed Mother.
Throughout the preceding months, three young shepherd children in Portugal had reported visits from the Virgin Mary. During her final appearance, Mary identified herself as Our Lady of the Rosary and asked that a chapel be built in her honor.
“I am the Lady of the Rosary. Continue to pray the rosary every day,” she told Lucia, according to the account of the apparition.
Mary also spoke of the importance of seeking God's forgiveness. When Lucia brought forward requests for healing and conversion, Our Lady urged people to change their lives and turn away from sin.
That same day, an estimated 70,000 people gathered at Fatima, where many reported witnessing an extraordinary event known as the Miracle of the Sun. After hours of rain, witnesses described the sun appearing to spin, change colors, and move across the sky. The event became one of the most widely remembered moments associated with the apparitions.
Yet the message entrusted to the children extended beyond the remarkable events of that day. Through the Rosary and a sincere desire for conversion, Our Lady called the faithful to deepen their relationship with God and seek His mercy.
As Catholics remember the final apparition, we can take Mary's words to heart by remaining faithful in prayer, seeking forgiveness, and allowing the mysteries of the Rosary to bring us closer to her Son.
