October 15 - St. Teresa of Ávila

Born: March 28, 1515
Died: Oct. 4, 1582
Nationality: Spanish
Vocation: Carmelite nun, mystic, and Doctor of the Church
Canonization: March 12, 1622, by Pope Gregory XV

St. Teresa of Ávila devoted her life to seeking a deeper union with God through prayer, becoming one of the Church’s most beloved spiritual teachers through her writings, Carmelite reforms, and profound devotion to the Lord.

Born in Spain in 1515, Teresa entered the Carmelite Order, where she developed a deep life of prayer. Although she experienced extraordinary moments of spiritual union with God, she understood that holiness could also be found in the ordinary struggles of daily life.

Her desire for a more prayerful religious life led her to reform the Carmelite Order. She helped establish the Discalced Carmelites, encouraging a return to simplicity, poverty, and contemplation so that religious communities could devote themselves more fully to the Lord.

Through her writings, Teresa taught that prayer was not simply a religious practice but a loving conversation with God. She encouraged the faithful to approach Him with confidence, even when prayer felt difficult or distractions arose.

Despite the challenges she faced, Teresa remained rooted in her trust in God's care. Her well-known words, "Let nothing disturb you. Let nothing make you afraid," reflect the peace she found in relying on the Lord.

Canonized in 1622, Teresa was later named a Doctor of the Church for her enduring teachings on prayer and the spiritual life.

St. Teresa's example invites us to make time for the Lord each day, speaking to Him with sincerity and learning to rest in His presence. Through prayer and trust, we can deepen our friendship with Christ and allow His love to guide our lives.

St. Teresa of Ávila, pray for us!
