October 20 - St. Paul of the Cross

Born: Jan. 3, 1694
Died: Oct. 18, 1775
Nationality: Italian
Vocation: Priest and founder of the Passionists
Canonization: June 29, 1867, by Pope Pius IX

St. Paul of the Cross devoted his life to contemplating the suffering and sacrifice of Jesus, finding in Christ's Passion a profound expression of God's love that shaped his vocation to prayer and preaching.

Born in Italy in 1694, Paul developed a love for prayer from an early age, encouraged by his family's faith. After briefly pursuing military service, he recognized a different calling and withdrew into a life of prayer, seeking to draw closer to Christ through meditation on His Passion.

His devotion eventually inspired him to establish the Congregation of the Passion, known as the Passionists, in 1720. The community embraced a life of prayer, simplicity, and penance, with a special mission to help others remember Christ's suffering and the love revealed through His sacrifice.

Paul carried that mission beyond the religious community through preaching and caring for those in need. His compassion and spiritual guidance drew many people toward the faith, and he continued serving the Church until his death in 1775.

St. Paul's example invites us to look toward the Cross with gratitude, remembering the depth of Jesus' love for each of us. By bringing our own struggles to Him in prayer, we can learn to trust more fully in His mercy and find strength in His sacrifice.

St. Paul of the Cross, pray for us!
