October 22 - St. John Paul II
Born: May 18, 1920
Died: April 2, 2005
Nationality: Polish
Vocation: Pope
St. John Paul II spent nearly 27 years leading the Catholic Church, encouraging the faithful to open their hearts to Christ and live with courage and hope. His papacy was marked by devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, a love for young people, and a desire to share the Gospel throughout the world.
Born Karol Józef Wojtyła in Wadowice, Poland, he lost his mother, brother, and father before entering the priesthood. During World War II, he worked as a laborer while secretly studying for the priesthood. He was ordained in 1946 and later became archbishop of Krakow.
Elected pope in 1978, John Paul II traveled widely, established World Youth Day, and taught about the sacredness of human life, the importance of family, and the call to holiness.
His faith in God's mercy was evident after an assassination attempt in 1981. He forgave the man who shot him and later visited him in prison. Despite declining health, he continued serving the Church in his final years.
St. John Paul II reminds us that following Christ requires courage, forgiveness, and trust in God's plan. His example invites us to remain faithful through life's difficulties and share Christ's love with others.
St. John Paul II, pray for us!
