October 23 - St. John of Capistrano
Born: Around 1386
Died: October 23, 1456
Nationality: Italian
Vocation: Franciscan Priest
St. John of Capistrano devoted his life to preaching the Gospel and strengthening the faith of others. His journey from a successful political career to the Franciscan priesthood reminds us that God can lead us toward holiness in unexpected ways.
Born in Capistrano, Italy, John studied law and became governor of Perugia at age 26. After being imprisoned during a political conflict, he reconsidered the direction of his life and felt called to leave behind his position and possessions to follow Christ.
He entered the Franciscan Order in 1416 and later became a priest. Inspired by St. Bernardine of Siena, John traveled throughout Europe, drawing large crowds through his preaching and encouraging people to renew their faith.
In 1456, he helped defend Belgrade against Ottoman forces, encouraging those fighting to protect the city. Weakened by his efforts, he became ill and died later that year.
St. John of Capistrano reminds us that no matter where life has taken us, God continues to call us closer to him. His example encourages us to answer that call with courage, trust, and a willingness to serve others.
St. John of Capistrano, pray for us!
