October 24 - St. Anthony Mary Claret

Born: December 23, 1807

Died: October 24, 1870

Nationality: Spanish

Vocation: Archbishop and Religious Founder

St. Anthony Mary Claret dedicated his life to bringing others closer to Christ through missionary preaching and devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. His ministry took him far beyond his native Spain, where he faced hardship and opposition in his efforts to spread the Gospel.

Born in Catalonia, Spain, Anthony worked as a weaver before pursuing the priesthood. Ordained at age 28, he became a missionary, traveling throughout Spain to preach and encourage Catholics to deepen their faith.

In 1849, he founded the Missionary Sons of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, known today as the Claretians. He later became archbishop of Santiago de Cuba, where he worked to strengthen religious life through preaching, teaching, and hearing confessions.

His ministry was not without suffering. After surviving an assassination attempt in Cuba, he showed mercy toward his attacker. He later served as confessor to Queen Isabella II of Spain and continued his work for the Church until his death in 1870.

St. Anthony Mary Claret reminds us that sharing Christ's love often requires courage and perseverance. His example encourages us to trust in God's calling and remain faithful, even when the path becomes difficult.

St. Anthony Mary Claret, pray for us!
