The September Martyrs were 191 Catholics who gave their lives for Christ during the French Revolution, remaining steadfast in their faith through a time of intense persecution.
As the revolution sought to bring the Church in France under the authority of the state, priests and religious were pressured to take an oath they could not accept in good conscience. Many who refused to take the oath were imprisoned.
In September 1792, the prisoners were massacred. Among them were bishops, priests, religious, and laypeople from different walks of life, all united by their faith in Christ.
Their courage offers a beautiful reminder that fidelity is formed long before the moment it is tested. It grows through the quiet choices to love the Lord, trust Him, and remain close to Him each day. When the ultimate test came, the September Martyrs remained faithful and gave their lives for Jesus.
Pope Pius XI beatified 191 of the martyrs in 1926. One of them, St. Salomone Leclercq, was later canonized by Pope Francis in 2016.
