St. Jerome’s love for the Word of God shaped a life of prayer, study, and a desire to know Christ more deeply.

St. Jerome had a deep desire to know Christ, a pursuit that drew him again and again to the Word of God.
Born in the fourth century, Jerome was highly educated and eventually devoted himself to a life of prayer and study. He became a priest and spent years learning the languages of Scripture, putting his gifts at the service of the Church.
Jerome later settled in Bethlehem, where study, writing, and prayer remained at the center of his life. His work with biblical texts became one of his greatest contributions to the Church, but his love for Scripture was ultimately rooted in his love for Jesus.
That conviction is captured in one of his best-known teachings: “Ignorance of Scriptures is ignorance of Christ.”
St. Jerome’s life encourages us to approach the Bible not simply as something to read or understand, but as a place to encounter the Lord. Each time we open Scripture, we have another opportunity to listen to His voice and grow closer to Him.
