September 8 - The Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Date: c. first century BC

“My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has regarded the low estate of his handmaiden. For behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed; for he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name.” — Luke 1:46-49

Nine months after her Immaculate Conception on Dec. 8, the Church celebrates the birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary, on Sept. 8.

The Bible does not record details of Mary’s infancy or early life but non-authoritative sources, such as the Protoevangelium of James, recount some of the Church’s traditional beliefs about Mary’s nativity.

In the words of St. John Vianney, “Let us live as the Blessed Virgin lived: loving God only, desiring God only, trying to please God only in all that we do.”

Blessed Virgin Mary, pray for us!
