St. Peter Claver spent nearly 40 years serving Christ among enslaved Africans in Cartagena, Colombia, bringing compassion and care to people who had endured tremendous suffering.
Born in Spain in 1580, Peter entered the Jesuits as a young man and soon felt drawn to missionary life. His vocation eventually brought him to Cartagena, where he was ordained a priest and encountered thousands of enslaved Africans arriving after brutal journeys across the Atlantic.
Peter devoted himself to caring for them. He met arriving ships and tended to those who were sick and suffering, offering practical help before teaching them about the faith. His ministry reflected a simple conviction: love for Christ had to become visible in love for the person before him.
“We must speak to them with our hands,” Peter said, “before we try to speak to them with our lips.”
For decades, Peter continued this work, sharing the faith and offering the hope of Christ to those he served. By the end of his life, he had taught and baptized more than 300,000 enslaved people.
Peter’s witness invites us to ask whether our own love for Jesus can be seen in the way we love others. We may never be called to a mission like his, but the Lord places people before each of us who need compassion, patience, friendship, or care. Like Peter, we can begin simply by drawing near and allowing our love for Christ to take shape in acts of mercy.
