Tennessee diocese remembers Dolly Parton, prays for her eternal rest

The Diocese of Knoxville, Tennessee, has joined in mourning the death of country music legend Dolly Parton, remembering the Tennessee native as one whose life “carried the spirit of our mountain home far beyond the Smokies.” 

In an Aug. 25 statement, the diocese offered prayers for Parton and those grieving her death, reflecting on the singer’s deep connection to the region she called home.

“East Tennessee knew Dolly Parton as more than a world-famous star. We knew her as one of our own,” the diocese said. “She was shaped by these hills and these churches. Her life shows what can grow from faith, perseverance, imagination, and love for one's neighbors — even from humble beginnings.”

Parton, who died Aug. 25 at age 80, grew up in the mountains of East Tennessee before building a career that made her one of the most prominent figures in American entertainment, as Zeale News previously reported. The diocese noted that Parton spoke openly about her Christian faith throughout her career and that it was particularly evident in her giving millions of free books to children in need. 

Bishop Mark Beckman of Knoxville also offered his own prayers following Parton’s death.

“I am very sorry to hear of her passing, and I am praying for those who are mourning her loss,” Bishop Beckman said. “She made a wonderful contribution to our world and our community, and she will be greatly missed.”

The diocese concluded its remembrance by entrusting Parton to the Lord. 

“As Catholics, we entrust her to the mercy of Almighty God,” the statement said. “We pray that Jesus, who is the resurrection and the life, will receive her into His eternal kingdom. We also pray for her family, friends, colleagues, and all who grieve her loss. May the Holy Spirit bring them consolation in this time of sorrow.”
