Canon law lists nine holy days of obligation but allows national bishops' conferences to suppress some. The US bishops decided to remove the obligation for the solemnity of Saint Joseph (March 19) and the feast of Saints Peter and Paul (June 29), and to always celebrate Epiphany on a Sunday. That leaves six holy days of obligation in the US: Mary, Mother of God (Jan. 1), Ascension of Our Lord (Thursday of 6th Week of Easter)*, Assumption of Mary (Aug. 15), All Saints Day (Nov. 1), and Christmas Day. *In many provinces, Ascension has been moved to Sunday.

Belgian seminarian Damien de Veuster prayed every day that he would be sent as a missionary to Hawaii. By 1863, the young priest was spreading the Gospel throughout the island. His mission didn’t end there – the future saint chose a path of radical self-sacrifice through his request to minister spiritually and physically to the leper colony of Molokai.
