Interim Police Chief Adam Hennie said a report of a shooting at Riverfront Live came at about 1 a.m. and that an estimated 500-600 people were inside the building at the time of shooting, according to WLWT5.
Multiple officers were stationed in the building’s parking lot, enabling a swift police response to the report. Nine people were transported to nearby hospitals. The outlet reported that six of the victims have since been treated and released, and two other victims are in stable condition at the hospital.
WLKY reported that a birthday party for Jermaine Tandy, a DJ originally from Louisville, Kentucky, was being thrown at the music venue at the time of the shooting. In a statement expressing sadness at the shooting, Tandy said that he has thrown a party for his birthday for the past 14 years and “have never had a security issue of this magnitude.”
“I'm hurt, I'm saddened, and I myself took on roles to make sure I could handle things that might’ve went wrong... I'm super glad to have had the support of the city, and I wish everybody affected prayers and support,” he said.
One witness who was at the venue, speaking on condition of anonymity, told WLWT5 that the shots rang out before the DJ had even played his first song. The witness said “she heard at least 30 different rounds go off inside the venue,” the outlet reported.
Tandy’s management also issued a statement on the shooting, expressing devastation at “the horrific events” that occurred at the venue.
“Our hearts go out to the victims, their families, and everyone impacted by this senseless act of violence,” the statement continued. “This event was intended to be an opportunity for us to come together and enjoy great music; and have fun celebrating life, it is deeply frustrating that the actions of one individual ruined the evening for so many.”
A shooting also occurred in Austin, Texas, early in the morning of March 1, as Zeale News reported. The suspect opened fire on patrons gathered outside a local bar, killing two people and injuring others before police intervened. The FBI is investigating the Austin shooting as a possible act of terrorism.
