St. Jeanne Elizabeth Bichier des Ages remained steadfast in her love for Christ during the turmoil of the French Revolution, dedicating herself to passing on the faith and serving those most in need.
As the Revolution disrupted Catholic life throughout France, Jeanne Elizabeth began teaching the faith and caring for the poor in the countryside. During this time, she met St. Andrew Fournet, a priest who had remained faithful to his ministry despite the dangers facing clergy. His guidance helped Jeanne Elizabeth discern how God was calling her to serve.
Together, Jeanne Elizabeth and Father Fournet founded the Daughters of the Cross, a religious community devoted to educating the young and caring for the poor and sick. What began as a faithful response to the needs around them grew steadily, with dozens of communities established by the time of her death.
St. Jeanne Elizabeth’s life shows how much God can accomplish through a heart willing to serve Him. At a time when the Church faced uncertainty and hardship, she answered with faith, charity, and a desire to bring Christ to others. Her example invites us to trust God in our own uncertain moments, knowing that He can use even our simplest acts of love and service to draw others closer to Him.
