Aug. 5: Dedication of the Basilica of St. Mary Major

Founded: Fourth century

Location: Rome, Italy

Significance: One of the Church's four major papal basilicas

Dedication: To the Blessed Virgin Mary after the Council of Ephesus (A.D. 431)

The Dedication of the Basilica of St. Mary Major commemorates one of Christianity's oldest churches dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Originally built in the fourth century, it was rebuilt and dedicated to Mary after the Council of Ephesus affirmed her title as Theotokos, or "Mother of God," in A.D. 431.

Pope Sixtus III rebuilt the basilica following the council, creating a lasting tribute to the mystery of the Incarnation and the Church's devotion to Mary. Through the centuries, St. Mary Major has remained a place of prayer and pilgrimage, welcoming generations of the faithful who come to honor the Mother of God and draw closer to Christ through her.

A cherished tradition also associates the feast with the title Our Lady of the Snows. According to legend, the Blessed Virgin Mary marked the site for the church by sending a miraculous snowfall on Rome's Esquiline Hill during the heat of August, inspiring the construction of the basilica that still stands today.

While this memorial commemorates the dedication of a church, it also points to the mystery the basilica was built to honor: Mary's role as the Mother of God. For centuries, St. Mary Major has reminded the faithful that every honor given to the Blessed Virgin ultimately leads us more deeply to her Son.

The Dedication of the Basilica of St. Mary Major invites us to give thanks for Mary's faithful "yes" to God and to entrust ourselves to her loving care as she continually leads us to Christ.
