St. Dominic devoted his life to preaching the Gospel and leading others more deeply into the truth of the Catholic faith. Prayer, study, and contemplation were the wellspring of his ministry, giving strength to the work he carried out throughout his life.
After studying for the priesthood, Dominic became a canon at the cathedral of Osma. While traveling through southern France with his bishop, he encountered the Albigensian heresy and recognized the need for preaching that was rooted in both truth and an authentic Christian witness.
In 1215, Dominic founded the Order of Preachers, later known as the Dominicans. The order united prayer, study, and preaching, sending friars throughout Europe to proclaim the Gospel and help strengthen the faith of the Church.
St. Dominic's witness continues to inspire Catholics to seek Christ through prayer and to share the Gospel with wisdom, humility, and charity. His life reminds us that time spent with God is the wellspring of every faithful mission.
