November 6 - St. Leonard of Noblac

Born: Unknown

Died: Around 559

Nationality: French

Vocation: Hermit

Attributes: Abbot holding chains

Patronage: Political prisoners, captives, women in labor, horses

Canonized: Pre-Congregation

St. Leonard of Noblac became known for his compassion toward prisoners and his desire to lead others closer to Christ. Though born into nobility, he chose a life of prayer, humility, and service, bringing hope to those who longed for freedom.

Leonard embraced Christianity through the guidance of St. Remigius, the bishop of Reims. Deeply moved by his faith, he dedicated himself to helping others, especially those held in captivity, and worked to secure the release of prisoners.

Rather than pursue a position of authority in the Church, Leonard sought a life of solitude and prayer. He eventually settled in a forest in France, where his holiness attracted others seeking spiritual guidance and a religious community grew around him.

According to tradition, the chains of prisoners who sought St. Leonard's intercession miraculously broke, allowing them to regain their freedom. He also helped those who had been released begin new lives. After his death around 559, pilgrims continued seeking his intercession at his tomb.

St. Leonard of Noblac shows us how faith can inspire compassion and bring hope to those who are suffering. His example encourages us to trust in God's mercy, care for those in need, and remember that Christ offers the promise of freedom and new beginnings.

St. Leonard of Noblac, pray for us!
