July 16: Our Lady of Mount Carmel
Feast: July 16
Title: Our Lady of Mount Carmel
Patronage: Carmelite Order
The Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel celebrates the Blessed Virgin Mary's loving care for all who seek to follow her Son. For centuries, she has been honored as a faithful mother who leads her children ever closer to Christ.
The title "Our Lady of Mount Carmel" traces its roots to a community of hermits living on Mount Carmel in the Holy Land. Inspired by the example of the prophet Elijah, they dedicated their lives to prayer and placed themselves under the protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary, building a chapel in her honor. Over time, this community became the Carmelite Order, whose spirituality continues to draw countless people into a deeper life of prayer.
According to Carmelite tradition, the Blessed Virgin Mary later appeared to St. Simon Stock and entrusted him with the Brown Scapular. The Brown Scapular became a cherished sign of devotion to Our Lady and a reminder to imitate her virtues, remain faithful to Christ, and entrust ourselves to her motherly care.
Our Lady of Mount Carmel gently reminds us that the surest path to Jesus is through His Mother. As we place our lives in her hands, may she help us grow in prayer, persevere in faith, and always draw us closer to the heart of her Son.
Our Lady of Mount Carmel, pray for us!
