July 17: Carmelite Martyrs of Compiègne

Died: July 17, 1794, Paris, France

Vocation: Discalced Carmelite nuns

Beatification: 1906 by Pope Pius X

Canonization: December 18, 2024 (equipollent canonization) by Pope Francis

The Carmelite Martyrs of Compiègne are remembered for their unwavering fidelity to Christ during the French Revolution. Rather than abandon their religious vocation, they remained faithful to God even when it meant giving their lives.

The community consisted of 16 Carmelite sisters from Compiègne, France. When religious life was suppressed during the Reign of Terror, the sisters were forced to leave their monastery but continued living their Carmelite vocation in secret. Eventually, they were arrested for refusing to abandon their faith and religious life.

On July 17, 1794, the sisters were taken to the guillotine in Paris. Along the way, they sang hymns and prayed together. Before their execution, they renewed their religious vows, and one by one they gave their lives for Christ with remarkable peace and courage. Just ten days later, the Reign of Terror came to an end.

The Carmelite Martyrs of Compiègne show us that a life rooted in prayer can remain steadfast even in the face of great suffering. May their example inspire us to trust God more deeply and remain faithful to Him in every circumstance.

Carmelite Martyrs of Compiègne, pray for us!
