July 8: Saints Aquila and Priscilla

Born: Unknown

Died: Rome (date unknown)

Vocation: Married couple

Patronage: Marriage

Canonization: Pre-Congregation

Saints Aquila and Priscilla show us that ordinary married life can become a powerful witness to the Gospel. Together, they opened their hearts, their home, and their daily lives to Christ, helping build up the early Church through faithful service.

A Jewish couple living in Rome, Aquila and Priscilla were forced to leave the city after Emperor Claudius expelled the Jews. They settled in Corinth, where they met St. Paul. The couple became his close companions, accompanying him in his missionary work and helping spread the Gospel.

Later, they traveled with Paul to Ephesus, where their home became a place of worship and Christian instruction during the early days of the Church. After the decree against the Jews was lifted, they returned to Rome and continued serving the growing Christian community. Though little is known about the end of their lives, tradition holds that they were likely martyred for their faith.

Saints Aquila and Priscilla remind us that holiness is often lived out in the ordinary moments of daily life. Their example encourages us to welcome Christ into our homes, use our gifts in service to others, and strengthen those around us in the faith.

Saints Aquila and Priscilla, pray for us!
