October 16 - St. Margaret Mary Alacoque
Born: July 22, 1647
Died: Oct. 17, 1690
Nationality: French
Vocation: Visitation nun and mystic
St. Margaret Mary Alacoque dedicated her life to making the love of Jesus known through devotion to His Sacred Heart, inviting the faithful to draw closer to Christ through prayer, gratitude, and trust in His mercy.
Born in France in 1647, Margaret Mary endured illness and family hardships before entering the Order of the Visitation at age 24. Within the convent, she sought to serve the Lord through a quiet life of prayer, humility, and faithfulness to her religious duties.
During this time, Margaret Mary began experiencing visions of Jesus, who revealed His Sacred Heart and called her to help others recognize the depth of His love. She encouraged devotion to the Sacred Heart through frequent Holy Communion, prayer, and acts of reparation, including special observance of the first Friday of each month.
Although her visions drew skepticism from some within her community, Margaret Mary found support in Jesuit priest St. Claude de la Colombière, who recognized her sincerity and encouraged her devotion to the Sacred Heart.
St. Margaret Mary's example invites us to turn toward the Heart of Jesus with confidence, remembering that His love remains constant even amid life's difficulties. Through prayer and trust in His mercy, we can offer our hearts more fully to the Lord.
St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, pray for us!
