October 6 - St. Bruno
Born: c. 1030
Died: Oct. 6, 1101
Nationality: German
Vocation: Priest, monk, and founder
St. Bruno desired a life where he could give himself more fully to prayer and the Lord, finding his vocation in the silence and solitude of the contemplative life.
Before embracing that calling, Bruno was a respected teacher in Reims, France, and later served as chancellor of the archdiocese. He eventually left his position and withdrew with several companions who shared his desire for a life devoted to God.
The small community settled in the mountains of Chartreuse, France, where the men lived in separate cells and gathered each day for prayer. Their life of silence, work, and contemplation became the foundation of the Carthusian Order.
Bruno’s solitude was interrupted when Pope Urban II called him to Rome to serve as an adviser. He later declined appointment as a bishop and returned to the contemplative life, spending his final years in Calabria, Italy.
St. Bruno’s life invites us to make room for that same quiet with the Lord. Setting aside even a few moments of distraction can give us time to pray, listen, and place ourselves more fully in God’s presence.
St. Bruno, pray for us!
