The Church celebrates Saints Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael, three archangels who appear throughout Scripture carrying out God’s work and drawing His people closer to Him.
Each is entrusted with a different mission. Michael appears as a defender of God’s people, most notably leading the angels against Satan in the Book of Revelation. Gabriel brings messages from God, announcing the birth of John the Baptist before appearing to the Virgin Mary with the news that she would become the Mother of Jesus.
Raphael’s mission unfolds more quietly in the Book of Tobit. He accompanies Tobias on his journey and becomes an instrument of God’s healing for his family. Together, the three archangels give us a beautiful picture of God’s care: He protects His people, speaks to them, and accompanies them along the way.
Yet Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael never point to themselves. Their missions are entirely at the service of God, faithfully carrying out what He asks of them and helping His plan unfold.
Their feast invites us to place greater trust in the Lord, even when we cannot see all the ways He is at work. Like the archangels, we can remain close to God, listen for His direction, and faithfully serve Him wherever He sends us.
