State Department: Trump administration has revoked more than 175,000 visas
The department cited crimes, immigration fraud, national security threats, and calls for violence against Americans among the reasons for the revocations.
The State Department announced Aug. 10 that it has revoked more than 175,000 visas from foreign nationals under President Donald Trump, citing criminal activity, calls for violence against Americans, fraud, abuse of the immigration system, and threats to national security.
According to a department fact sheet, most revocations resulted from encounters with law enforcement, with assault, driving under the influence, theft, and drug crimes among the leading causes.
The department highlighted several cases, including visa holders charged with felony rape and sexual battery, kidnapping and human trafficking, or possessing child sexual abuse material.
In one case cited by the department, a U.S. embassy in North Africa revoked more than 100 visas held by parents accused of engaging in “birth tourism” — traveling to the U.S. to give birth so their children would receive U.S. citizenship.
In another case, the department revoked the visa of a foreign national who allegedly posed as the operator of a legitimate business helping vulnerable patients obtain healthcare while participating in a Medicaid fraud scheme that billed the government for more than $5 million in services the department called “fake.”
Other cases cited by the department involved a person facing more than a dozen counts of possessing child sexual abuse material, a foreign national arrested for allegedly driving with heroin in the vehicle and a blood alcohol level more than three times the legal limit, and multiple foreign nationals who celebrated the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio also said in an Aug. 12 X post that the State Department’s Birth Tourism Prevention Task Force had revoked more than 600 visas in its first month from foreign nationals allegedly participating in birth tourism schemes.
“The State Department will use all available tools to dismantle birth tourism networks and defend the integrity of U.S. citizenship,” Rubio said.
The department reported in January that it had revoked more than 100,000 visas.
The Trump administration has simultaneously tightened its standards for issuing visas by expanding screening and social media vetting.
