Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee, a Republican, signed a resolution designating June 2026 as “Nuclear Family Month” in the state, declaring that the nuclear family — defined as one husband, one wife, and their children — is “God’s perfect design for humanity.”
Lee signed the measure, HJR 182, on April 9. It states that the nuclear family has “been the bedrock of society since the creation of the world” and has served as the “basic building block of Tennessee’s society throughout her formative years” and helped foster prosperity within the U.S.

The resolution cites data linking fatherlessness and unstable family structures to higher rates of poverty, substance abuse, mental health and behavioral issues, suicide, and incarceration of children and youths. It also cites a 2016 study by psychologist Peter Langman on 56 school shooters, saying 82% of the shooters were raised in an unstable family environment or without both biological parents together.
“The nuclear family is under attack in our beloved State and nation, and it is our responsibility to uplift, protect, and support values that help Tennessee prosper,” the resolution states.
The resolution, sponsored by Republican state Rep. Bud Hulsey, moved through the legislature over the course of more than a year. The House first approved it 72-18 in April 2025, before the Senate passed an amendment in March 2026 that changed the designation from June 2025 to June 2026, according to legislative records. The House later concurred in the amendment in a 72-14 vote, sending the measure to Lee’s desk.
Indiana Gov. Mike Braun, a Republican, similarly signed a proclamation June 1 designating June as “Nuclear Family Month” in his state. In an X post, Braun said the proclamation “recognizes the important role families play in shaping the future of our state and our country.”

Republican Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders declared June 2026 as “Fidelity Month,” saying in the declaration that her state is committed to “cultivating fidelity to God, family, community, and country,” which “contributes to human flourishing and supports a health, stable, well-ordered society.”
The declaration added that June will be "promoted by community and faith leaders as a time to encourage renewed dedication to these virtues and institutions."
