Chivalry isn’t dead—or at least, it shouldn’t be. The concept of being a gentleman has increasingly been pushed aside in today’s culture, which often seeks to dismantle traditional gender roles. To help bring back the role of a respectful gentleman, here are 10 essential manners every man should practice.
1. Open (and hold) the door for others
A simple yet meaningful gesture, holding the door for someone shows courtesy. Always open the door for women, but also extend this habit to anyone entering or exiting behind you – no matter who they are.
2. Remove your hat indoors
Hats should come off when you step inside, whether you’re dining out, attending Mass, or gathering with family. As a bonus, always remove your hat during the Pledge of Allegiance or prayer.
3. Offer to carry others' belongings
Helpfulness goes a long way! If you are traveling with a woman, carry her luggage. Offer to help a struggling stranger place his or her bag in the overhead bin when flying. Shopping with a lady? Carry her bags for her. It's a simple action that they will greatly appreciate.
4. Revisit the firm handshake
Remember when your dad or grandfather taught you how to have a firm, but not crushing, handshake. As you offer your hand, make eye contact and repeat the person’s name to show you’re engaged.
5. Remember: ladies first
Allow women to go before you. This can be as easy as letting ladies step outside the elevator first or letting them order first at a restaurant.
6. Put away your phone
When you’re having a conversation, give the other person your full attention. In a world dominated by tech, you’re sure to make a (very) good impression if you put the phone away.
7. Wait until everyone is served before eating
Make sure everyone sits, gets settled in, and is served before digging in yourself. Patience is a virtue, so just wait the extra minute.
8. Be punctual
Time is valuable. Show respect for others by arriving on time for meetings, dates, and gatherings. If you struggle with this, try arriving at least 2 minutes early to every engagement!
9. Dress appropriately
Men and women have begun to dress much more casually in general. But sweatpants are still not appropriate for every occasion. A well-dressed man makes a lasting impression, so take pride in your appearance.
10. Date etiquette
Whether it's a first date or a night out with your wife of 50 years, open her car door, pull out her chair, and help her with her coat. Offer to pay, especially if it is a first date.
