Forget dusty old portraits and boring stories. Today, imagine for a second wanting something more than anything else in the entire world. You're begging for it, fasting for it, and waiting years and years while everyone around you wonders if you've been completely forgotten by God.

Today, we are talking about two incredible people who experienced exactly that kind of sorrow, a husband and wife who faced the deep, painful struggle of having no children. But spoiler alert, their story doesn't end in sadness. It ends with a miracle that literally altered the course of human history.

They didn't just receive any child. They received a child who would grow up to become the mother of the savior of the world. Today, we are exploring the lives of the ultimate historical duo, Saints Anne and Joachim. Now, if you were to open up your Bible right now and start flipping through the pages looking for the names Anne and Jochem, you might be a little surprised. Why? Because the scriptures actually contain zero information about the parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Crazy, right? Obviously, just like any of us, she had to have parents, but the Bible itself leaves them completely unnamed. So, where do we get their story? Catholic tradition and an ancient historical text known as the Proto-Evangelium of James step in to fill in the blanks. While this text isn't included in the official canon of the Bible, it gives us the rich, dramatic details of who these people were and how they lived. These saints lived a very long time ago, in the first century B.C., and their canonization is actually classified as Pre-congregation, meaning they were recognized as saints long before the modern official church process was even created.

Let's set the scene and dive into the drama. Anne and Joachim were married, and they were widely known as devout and incredibly holy Jews. However, despite their intense faith, they carried a heavy, heavy burden. They were barren. In their time and culture, not having a child wasn't just a personal heartbreak. It was deeply stigmatized. But did Anne and Joachim throw in the towel? Did they walk away from their faith? Absolutely not. Instead, they took dramatic spiritual action. They fasted. They prayed intensely.

They literally begged God to finally give them a child. Think about the kind of perseverance that takes. They wrestled with God in prayer, pouring out their hearts year after year. And then, the massive breakthrough. God answered their desperate, faithful prayers in a way that exceeded anything they could have possibly imagined. Anne finally conceived a child. But this wasn't just any ordinary child. This miracle child was Mary. Catholics around the world recognize this exact monumental moment every single year on December 8th when they celebrate The Feast of the Immaculate Conception.

Fast forward a few years. Mary is now an energetic three-year-old. You would think that after waiting their entire lives for this precious daughter, Anne and Joachim would want to hold on to her tightly and never let her out of their sight. But remember, they were deeply holy and devoted to God. When Mary was just three years old, her parents took her to the temple to consecrate her completely to God. This act of Profound sacrifice and immense thanksgiving is still celebrated by the Church today, annually on November 21st, and is known as the Presentation of Mary.

In classic art and statues, if you look at their saintly attributes, you will almost always see them depicted alongside the child Mary, Because of their unique and vital role in the story of salvation, Anne and Joachim are the patron saints of grandparents. And that makes perfect sense, because they are literally the grandparents of Jesus himself. On top of that, St. Anne has a special patronage all her own. She is the patron saint of mothers and women in labor.

The lives of Saints Anne and Joachim give us the perfect challenge for this week. As the grandparents of Jesus, Anne and Joachim's feast day is a specific call to honor our own grandparents. So, reach out to them, or if you can't, an elderly person in your community.

Call them on the phone, write them a letter, or just sit down with them and ask them to tell you a story from their life. Show them the deep respect, honor, and love that Anne and Joachim modeled.
