The Moral Order and Defense of the Nation

Among the gravest concerns of our time is the growing effort to weaken or even dissolve the sovereignty of nations in favor of a single global authority. Such proposals are often presented to us as instruments of peace or unity, yet they stand in contradiction to the moral order established by God. The family and the nation are not accidents of history, nor products of ideology. They arise from the natural law and are indisposed to the natural law. for the attainment of the common good.

Pope Benedict XVI has taught that cooperation among nations is indeed necessary, especially in addressing matters that cross national boundaries. But such cooperation must always respect the principles of subsidiarity and solidarity, which safeguard the dignity of the human person and the rightful autonomy of natural communities. International structures, when rightly ordered, exist to assist nations, not to absorb or replace them. When authority is detached from the natural societies willed by God, it becomes harmful, threatening the goods essential to human flourishing, the inviolability of human life, the integrity of marriage and the family, and the freedom to worship God, according to right reason and divine revelation.

History teaches plainly that whenever political authority seeks to become absolute or universal, it risks becoming one of the other gods condemned in sacred scripture, an authority that enslaves rather than liberates. A global government not rooted in the truth about God and man would inevitably erode authentic freedom. For this reason, patriotism, rightly understood, is a necessary virtue. It renders due love and service to the community assigned to us by divine providence, and safeguards the moral foundations upon which any just international cooperation must rest.

O Sacred Heart of Jesus, King of Heaven and Earth, I place today my nation, the United States of America, into your heart, pierced for love of us. On the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, I acknowledge that true liberty is your gift, and that our lasting homeland is the eternal kingdom of God. Under the mantle of Our Lady of Guadalupe, And through the intercession of her Immaculate Heart, bless my homeland anew, purify her from sin, and guide her leaders in truth, justice, and peace.

So that she may safeguard all human life, respect the integrity of marriage and the family, and honor the practice of religion, reign in my home and in my nation, draw every heart into communion with you, that your truth, love, justice, mercy, and peace may triumph in America and throughout the world.
