The renowned American literary critic Harold Bloom, an agnostic, once said “the universities and colleges in the English-speaking world that have sustained some sense of literature as a matter of powerful cognition and extraordinary aesthetic beauty tend to be Roman Catholic institutions.” Bloom donated some 25,000 volumes from his personal library to a small Catholic liberal arts school in 2002. Born on this day in 1930, he passed away in 2019. Happy birthday to Dr. Bloom, and requiescat in pace.
