In celebration of America's upcoming 250th anniversary, the Diocese of Norwich, Connecticut, is hosting a patriotic sing-along July 3, inviting families to honor the nation's past, present, and future through hymns and songs that have shaped American history.
The hour-long, family-friendly event will take place at the Cathedral of Saint Patrick in Norwich, where cathedral organist Michael Steven Lianos will lead attendees through what the diocese described as beloved patriotic hymns that have inspired generations of Americans.
Selections will include “My Country 'Tis of Thee,” “The Star-Spangled Banner,” “Eternal Father,” “Strong to Save,” the Navy Hymn, and “Battle Hymn of the Republic,” along with other patriotic and faith-filled pieces, according to the June 17 diocesan announcement.
The diocese said the event is intended to provide families with an opportunity to begin a new Independence Day tradition while celebrating America's semiquincentennial in a spirit of unity and thanksgiving.
The concert will also highlight the work of several American composers, including Aaron Copland, John Philip Sousa, Dudley Buck, and Connecticut native Charles Ives, whose music, the diocese said, helped shape the country's musical heritage.
"As our nation reflects on two and a half centuries of independence, sacrifice, and shared ideals,” the announcement read, “this event offers a meaningful opportunity to come together in song and gratitude.”
The sing-along, scheduled for 6:30 p.m. July 3, is free and open to the public.
