Billboards promoting devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus will be displayed throughout Franklin County, Ohio, during June as part of an annual campaign organized by a Catholic lay ministry.
Laity for Mercy, a central Ohio group led by Tim McAndrew, said at least six billboards were scheduled to be installed by June 1 at locations in Columbus, Grandview Heights, Galloway, and other high-traffic areas, according to Catholic Times Columbus.
“Many people have become confused by thinking of June as Pride Month when it’s been the Month of the Sacred Heart for centuries,” McAndrew told the outlet. “It’s time to reclaim the month for Our Lord.”
The signs are expected to remain in place through June 30.

The billboards feature an image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus alongside a message stating that June is devoted to the Sacred Heart. Similar signs have appeared in the Columbus area for several years and are funded through private donations, according to the organization.
McAndrew estimates the signs, placed in numerous locations throughout the region, could be viewed by more than 1.6 million people during the month based on local traffic counts.
"The billboards are a great way of reaching people where they are," McAndrew said.
The organization said seven additional billboards are planned for the Cincinnati area.
According to McAndrew, monthly billboard costs range from about $600 to $1,500 depending on location. He said last year's campaign expanded to 25 billboards after receiving a surge of donations.
Laity for Mercy also sponsors billboards promoting the Divine Mercy devotion, which are displayed around Divine Mercy Sunday.
McAndrew, 64, of Grove City, said he has promoted the Sacred Heart and Divine Mercy devotions for more than two decades. His efforts have included publishing a newsletter, maintaining a website, and organizing public displays related to Catholic devotional practices.
The group also sponsors a traveling exhibit highlighting 153 Eucharistic miracles recognized by the Catholic Church. The exhibit is scheduled to be displayed after Masses on June 6 and June 7 at St. Andrew Church in Columbus.
The billboard campaign coincides with broader Catholic observances related to the Sacred Heart. The Catholic bishops of the U.S. are scheduled to consecrate the nation to the Sacred Heart June 12, which is the Feast of the Sacred Heart, with a novena of prayers beginning in diocesan churches June 3.
