François de Laval was born in France in 1623 to a noble family. From an early age he dedicated himself to God, showing promise as a scholar and a priest. Though destined for a comfortable ecclesiastical career, he discerned a missionary call and renounced privilege to serve in New France.
Ordained a priest in 1647, he was named Vicar Apostolic of New France in 1658, effectively becoming the first bishop of Quebec. He arrived in 1659 to shepherd a vast, rugged territory stretching from the Atlantic to the Great Lakes, with only a handful of priests to aid him.
Bishop Laval became a tireless builder of the Church in Canada. He founded parishes, schools, and missions, often traveling long distances by canoe or on foot to visit scattered communities. His leadership gave structure and stability to the fledgling Catholic presence in New France.
He also established the Seminary of Quebec in 1663, which trained both clergy and lay leaders and became a cornerstone of Catholic education in Canada. His vision ensured that the Church in the New World would not merely depend on missionaries from Europe, but would form its own leaders.
Known for his austerity and humility, Laval lived simply, gave generously to the poor, and defended Indigenous peoples from exploitation, resisting the powerful fur trade interests when they clashed with Gospel values.
He resigned as bishop in 1688 but remained in Quebec, continuing to support his successors and live among the people until his death on May 6, 1708.
François de Laval is honored as the founder of the Catholic Church in Canada and a model of missionary zeal and pastoral charity.
Saint François de Laval, pray for us.
