October 30 - St. Alphonsus Rodriguez
Born: 1533
Died: October 30, 1617
Nationality: Spanish
Vocation: Jesuit Religious Brother
St. Alphonsus Rodriguez dedicated his life to serving Christ through prayer, humility, and simple acts of kindness. After experiencing great personal loss, he found a new calling in religious life, where his quiet devotion would inspire others to grow closer to God.
Born in Spain, Alphonsus inherited his family's textile business but faced financial struggles and the loss of his wife, children, and mother. Through these hardships, he turned to prayer and felt called to religious life.
Although initially rejected by the Jesuits because of his age and limited education, Alphonsus was later accepted as a religious brother. He was assigned to a college in Majorca, where he spent decades as a doorkeeper, welcoming visitors and treating each person as he would Christ.
His holiness and devotion to prayer inspired many, including St. Peter Claver, who sought his spiritual guidance. Alphonsus continued serving faithfully until his death in 1617.
The life of St. Alphonsus Rodriguez shows us that even the simplest acts of service can become expressions of love for God. His example encourages us to approach our daily responsibilities with humility and kindness, recognizing Christ in the people we meet.
St. Alphonsus Rodriguez, pray for us!
