October 28 - Saints Simon and Jude
Born: First century
Died: First century
Nationality: Jewish
Vocation: Apostles
Saints Simon and Jude were among the twelve apostles who followed Jesus and devoted their lives to bringing others closer to Him. Though little is known about their lives, tradition remembers them for spreading the Gospel together and remaining faithful to Christ until death.
Simon, known as Simon the Zealot, was one of the twelve apostles chosen by Jesus. Jude, also called Thaddeus, is especially remembered today as the patron saint of desperate situations and seemingly impossible causes.
Although Scripture offers few details about their lives, tradition holds that Simon and Jude eventually joined together to spread Christianity in Persia. Their preaching brought others to the faith, even as they faced opposition.
According to tradition, the two apostles were killed after refusing to abandon their faith in Christ. Their relics are venerated in St. Peter's Basilica in Rome.
Although much of their work remains unknown, Simon and Jude answered Christ's call without knowing where it would lead them. Their willingness to follow him invites us to consider how we can respond to God's call in our own lives, even when the way forward is unclear.
The lives of Saints Simon and Jude show us that faithfulness to Christ calls for courage and perseverance. Their example encourages us to trust in God's strength and remain devoted to him, even in the face of difficulty.
Saints Simon and Jude, pray for us!
