October 27 - St. Frumentius

Born: Fourth century (exact date unknown)

Died: Traditionally around A.D. 383

Nationality: Syrian

Vocation: Bishop and Missionary

St. Frumentius helped spread Christianity throughout the ancient Kingdom of Aksum, located in present-day Ethiopia and Eritrea. As its first bishop, he played an important role in establishing the Church in the region.

Born in Tyre, in present-day Lebanon, Frumentius was traveling by ship when, according to tradition, his group was attacked after stopping near the Ethiopian coast. He and his companion Aedesius were the only survivors. The two were then brought to the court of the king of Aksum, where they eventually earned his trust.

During his years at court, Frumentius worked to spread Christianity. Hoping to strengthen the growing Christian community, he traveled to Alexandria, Egypt, and asked St. Athanasius to send clergy to Ethiopia. Athanasius instead ordained him bishop and entrusted the mission to him.

Returning to Ethiopia, Frumentius continued preaching the Gospel and establishing churches. According to tradition, he baptized King Ezana, and Christianity eventually became the kingdom's official religion. The Ethiopian people came to call him Abuna, meaning “Our Father.”

St. Frumentius reminds us that God can lead us toward a greater purpose through circumstances we never expected. His example encourages us to follow God's will with courage and trust, wherever he may call us.

St. Frumentius, pray for us!
