St. Narcissus of Jerusalem dedicated his life to serving the Church, becoming known for his holiness and devotion to the faithful. Despite facing false accusations and spending years in solitude, he returned to his ministry and continued serving well into old age.
Narcissus became bishop of Jerusalem in the late second century, helping guide the early Church and taking part in a council that affirmed the celebration of Easter on Sunday. He is also remembered for a remarkable miracle said to have taken place during the Easter Vigil.
According to tradition, when the lamps in the church ran out of oil during the Easter Vigil, Narcissus prayed over water, which miraculously turned into oil, allowing the lamps to remain lit.
His ministry was also marked by hardship. After being falsely accused of a serious offense, Narcissus withdrew from public life and spent several years in solitude. He later returned to Jerusalem, where the faithful welcomed him back and encouraged him to resume his duties. As he grew older, St. Alexander was appointed to assist him.
St. Narcissus reminds us that faithfulness to God can carry us through even the most difficult seasons of life. His example encourages us to persevere through trials and trust in God's care, no matter what challenges we face.
St. Narcissus of Jerusalem, pray for us!
