Saint of the day, October 8
St. Pelagia’s remarkable conversion reflects the power of God’s mercy and the possibility of beginning anew through faith and repentance.

October 8 - St. Pelagia the Penitent
Died: Traditionally placed in the 5th century
Nationality: Syrian
Vocation: Hermit and penitent
St. Pelagia the Penitent left behind a life of wealth and worldly attention to follow Christ, becoming known for her repentance and devotion to prayer.
According to Christian tradition, Pelagia was a wealthy actress and dancer in Antioch whose life changed after hearing St. Nonnus preach about salvation. Moved by his words, she sought baptism and began a new life rooted in the Christian faith.
Her conversion led her to give up her possessions and eventually travel to Jerusalem, where she withdrew to a small dwelling on the Mount of Olives. There, Pelagia embraced a life of solitude, spending her days in prayer, fasting, and penance.
Tradition holds that Pelagia lived disguised as a monk, concealing her former identity even as others came to recognize her holiness. It was only after her death that those around her learned who she had been.
Although much of her story comes from later Christian accounts, Pelagia has been honored for centuries as an example of repentance. The woman once known for her public life came to be remembered for her dedication to God in solitude.
St. Pelagia's life speaks to the importance of seeking forgiveness and making a sincere effort to change. Her example encourages us to turn away from sin, remain faithful in prayer, and trust in the mercy of the Lord.
St. Pelagia the Penitent, pray for us!
