Miracle of the Wave

Today, we travel to the Pacific coast of Colombia, to a small island town called Tumaco, to relive an extraordinary miracle that took place in 1906. It's a story of fear, faith, and a community saved in the face of certain disaster.

Located on Colombia's southwestern coastline, near the border with Ecuador, is a quiet island community, known for its fishing culture and Afro-Colombian heritage. But on January the 31st, 1906, this peaceful town faced a terrifying threat, a massive tsunami.

That morning, the sea suddenly pulled back from the shore, a sure sign of an impending disaster. A powerful earthquake had just struck offshore, and now a giant wave was racing toward Tumaco. The townspeople, mostly fishermen of their families, realized the danger immediately. Panic spread. There was nowhere to run, and no time.

In a moment of desperation, the local priest, Father Gerardo Larrondo, and his assistant, Father Julián Moreno, made a courageous decision. They gathered the townspeople and led them in a procession to the beach. Carrying the blessed sacrament in a monstrance, they knelt in the sand and began to pray.

And then, something miraculous happened. As the towering wall of water approached, travelling at nearly 200 miles per hour, Father Larondo lifted the Eucharist high and made the sign of the cross over the ocean, according to multiple eyewitnesses. The moment the consecrated host was raised, the wave suddenly stopped in its tracks.

It reached only as high as the priest's waist, then gently receded. Sparing Tumaco, and everyone there. Not a single life was lost. Not a single building was destroyed. Since that day, the people of Tumaco have referred to the event as the Miracle of the Wave.

Each year, on January the 31st, they commemorate it with a procession and prayer, celebrating not only survival, But also the deep spiritual rebirth that followed. What could have been a tragedy became a sign of divine protection. The story of the miracle spread beyond the island, and many confirmed what they saw.

For the people of Tumaco, it was not just a moment of survival. It was a clear manifestation of God's presence through the Holy Eucharist. Even today. The town's devotion to the Blessed Sacrament remains at the heart of their Catholic faith. What happened on that beach over a century ago continues to inspire hope, reverence, and unity.
